KENYA Ports Authority has recorded a 2.9 per cent increase of total throughput of cargo handled at the port of Mombasa in the last ten months.
This is the the average quantity of cargo passing through the port on a daily basis from arrival to loading onto a ship or from the discharge from a ship to the exit from the port complex.
Managing director Gichiri Ndua yesterday said the port handle a total throughput of 18.639 million tons, up from 18.106 tons handled in the same period last year.
This according to the management is an increase of 533,390 tons of cargo handled at the port between January and October 2013. Speaking during the second annual KPA regional media conference at Flamingo hotel in Mombasa, Ndua said performance at the port has tremendously improved following recent expansion works including the new berth 19 commissioned in August.
He said the growth has also been driven by acquisition of new equipment to supplement operations, implementation of an integrated security system and upgrading of its ICT systems for faster documentation.
“The several expansion projects and port efficiency measures undertaken for the last few months have seen traffic increase at the port. We have been working hard to enhance efficiency at the port of Mombasa,” said Ndua.
In August ,KPA recorded a 13.7 percent upward increased on cargo handled at the port with a record delivery of 1,759 Twenty-foot equivalent unit in the month of July, the highest number of containers to be delivered throught the port of Mombasa in a day.
Ndua said government support has also helped improve efficiency at the Mombasa facility. This is after President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directives in July to improve port efficiency which included coordination of all players in the port by the KPA managing director.
The president also ordered for 24 hour operation by institutions in the port, abolition of scanning of transit cargo and transshipment bond, rationalization of weigh bridges and removal of road blocks to improve the flow of cargo from the port.
“The unprecedented immense government support has enabled us to achieve acceptable level of short and ship truck turnaround time, cargo dwell-time and commendable transit time,” Said Ndua. He said KPA has also achieved a harmonised 24 hour working schedule.
