Commissioner of Customs Wambui Namu suspended Kipevu CFS on claims that it stripped 90 containers of rice and stored it at a private godown within a customs area.

Other accusations were breaking container seals, stripping containers and repackaging contents without customs authorisation besides leasing a private godown within the premises to Export Trading Company for export of tree gum.

However, KRA has written to the Kenya Ports Authority asking it to commence delivery of cargo to Kipevu CFS after it paid the fine on October 6.

CFSs, which were started in 2007 to ease congestion at the Port of Mombasa, have evolved into full customs bonded facilities currently handling domestic containers.

Industry players have in the past claimed that unscrupulous traders use the facilities to evade import duty by bribing some customs officers at the stations.
