The Mombasa-based clearing and forwarding businessman is a first term MP. Before winning the seat on an ODM ticket in 2007, he had contested on a Kanu ticket on a couple of times between 1992 and 2002 but losing on each of them. His constituency is one of the largest in the county with about 70,000 voters. It covers the whole of Siaya Town and borders Bondo, Ugenya and Budalang’i constituencies.

Siaya county is home of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga dynasty which controls politics in the rest of Luo Nyanza and beyond. It has five constituencies.

James Orengo

The Lands minister is the longest serving MP in the county having first been elected in 1980 in a by-election after Archbishop Stephen Ondiek lost the seat in a petition.

He was re-elected in 1983 but fled from the Kanu dictatorship to Tanzania. He was back at the advent of pluralism and recaptured the seat on Ford Kenya ticket in 1992 and again in 1997.

However, he lost the seat in the 2002 election but won it again in 2007. The lawyer was one of the Young Turks assembled by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga to fight for pluralism.

Mr Orengo was a presidential candidate in 2002 on the Social Democratic Party ticket but finished in fourth position with 0.4 percent of the vote.  He also lost his parliamentary seat to his long time rival Ondiek.

He is considered as one of the closest confidants of Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
